General Description

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for creating effective mechanical designs and/or drawings to meet project requirements while fulfilling the necessary project specifications with guidance from the Mechanical Design Leads, Technical Sales Representative, or Engineering Manager. The Mechanical Designer will utilize complex drafting/design software to make 2D designs and drawings.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Design Drafter I – This is the entry level. The employee aids in the creation and refinement of technical drawings for mechanical parts, equipment, dies, tooling, controls, and assemblies to capture design intent and to accomplish the manufacturing goals of a project. They proceed with direction from management and modify and revise drawings as needed to update designs or to correct mistakes and design errors.
  • Mechanical Design Drafter The employee aids in the creation and up-keep of production manufacturing drawings and system schematic drawings for projects. The employee will ensure that drawings are accurate representations of the approved designs to assist in fabrication of the configured system/spools.
  • Mechanical Designer I – This is the intermediate level. The employee is responsible for creating effective mechanical designs with input from either the Technical Sales Representative, Mechanical Design Lead or Engineering Manager. With input from management, the employee must be able to interpret sketches and blueprints to develop system and spool designs that are in compliance with project guidelines.
  • Mechanical Designer II – This is an experienced The employee is responsible for creating effective mechanical designs with minimal to no input from the Technical Sales Representative, Mechanical Design Lead or Engineering Manager. Additionally, the employee must be able to interpret sketches and blueprints to develop system and spool designs that are in compliance with project guidelines.
  • Mechanical Design Engineer The employee is responsible for creating mechanical designs. With minimal oversight, the employee must be able to interpret sketches and blueprints for use in developing the project design as well as identifying compliance with project guidelines. The employee will work with a Technical Sales Representative to understand job inputs and/or job scope to know what direct actions are required. A degree in Mechanical Engineering is required for this position.
  • Mechanical Design Engineer II – This is an advanced The employee plays a key role in the Commercial Design Team. The employee will aid the Technical Sales Team and Commercial Design Team to develop system and spool designs that are in compliance with project guidelines along with Company’s Design Standards. The employee will help mentor the Commercial Design Team regarding system and spool designs. The employee will be able to analyze pipe stress analysis reports, interpret project specifications, applicable codes, and regulations (ASME, NFPA, State/National Codes) and possess the ability to challenge solutions and innovate to reduce the time needed to meet design deadlines. A degree in Mechanical Engineering is required for this position

Management/Supervisory

This position does not manage or supervise staff.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Creation and refinement of technical drawings for mechanical parts, equipment, dies, tooling, controls, and assemblies to capture design intent and document the key aspects necessary to accomplish the manufacturing goals of a project
  • Layout and draw schematic, orthographic, or angle views to depict functional relationships of components, assemblies, systems, and machines
  • Get direction from a Technical Sales Representative, Mechanical Design Lead or Engineering Manager to understand job inputs and job scope to know what actions are required
  • Modify and revise drawings as needed to update designs or to correct mistakes or design errors
  • Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed
  • Use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment/software:
    • AutoCAD
    • SolidWorks
    • 3D motion controller
  • Help establish/utilize the Engineering design library:
    • 3D model library of parts
    • 2D block library of parts/details
    • Company best practice design guides
  • Provide accurate time estimates for work required
  • Apply sound drafting/design principles in the development and documentation of products
  • Work effectively and efficiently alone or as a member of the team to design layouts, mechanical components, electromechanical components, and systems; utilize the team for help and to resolve design issues or other problems
  • Thorough understanding of drafting principles and Manufacturing standards:
    • Drawing Standards
    • Weld Standards
    • Piping design Standards
    • Document Control Standards
    • Design Software Standards
    • Machining Standards
  • Properly select parts/materials/design components and apply part numbers as needed
  • Able to use complex math needed in design development
  • Produce illustrations for reference manuals and technical publications
  • Able to relay an idea/concept thru conversation, freehand drawing, showing other design examples
  • Effectively manage your own time and prioritize tasks
  • Involved with schedules during all phases of design to ensure deliverables are reasonable for project execution
  • Help maintain design schedules and design schedule awareness thru interaction with all departments
  • Create and maintain a Bill of Materials for more than one project
  • Be an active part of continuous improvement efforts:
    • Help identify areas the Design dept. may be a “bottle neck”
    • Offer up ideas for improvement
    • Effective communication with co-workers
    • Identify the pros and cons of a solution and all alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches
    • Understand the importance of new information for both current and future problem-solving/decision-making
  • Take part in conferences with customers as needed for design reviews and to provide answers as needed
  • Perform job duties in an ethical and professional manner

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Adherence to all set deadlines with overall responsibility for the project requirements
  • Ensures required services (drawings, specifications, estimation inputs) are delivered on time and to cost/quality standards
  • Apply and adhere to all Company’s Design Standards as well as customer and code requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skill Requirements & Certifications

  • (Engineer) BSME or degree in relevant engineering or physics discipline with an advanced degree preferred
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process and techniques (forming, machining, welding, and inspection/testing) used in the manufacturing of fabricated metal parts
  • Cryogenic, vacuum, and/or pressure equipment fabrication experience
  • Experience with ASME Code Section VIII, B31.3 Piping Code, Vacuum Vessels and Process Vessels standard practices a plus
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and understand GD&T
  • Competent in use of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MS Office, MS Teams, and MS Project
  • Ability to effectively present information to Management

Work Environment

  • A professional work environment in an office setting

    • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable
    • Requires working in very hot (above 90°F degrees) or very cold (below 32°F degrees) temperatures

Skills Required

  • Advanced level skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and in general data entry
  • Must have strong organizational skills and be detail oriented. Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, prioritize work and handle last-minute demands appropriately
  • Proven success with working in a team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously without constant supervision

  • Valid California driver’s license and an insured vehicle in good working order
