Mechanical Design Manager will lead the Commercial Design Team, distribute resources and balance multiple and conflicting priorities to meet deadlines, as well as participate in hands-on Engineering and Project Management activities
Requires a detail oriented, self-starter possessing strong time management skills with the ability to optimize build-to-print or design-engineer process plans to deliver the required designs, drawings, and reports
The Commercial Design department utilizes primarily 2D design software. while ensuring that all drawings and designs are completed on time and adhere to all Company processes and procedures as well as all applicable codes and regulations (ASME, NFPA, State/National Codes)
Must also possess the ability to challenge solutions and innovate to reduce the time needed to meet design deadlines
Must have extensive knowledge of department processes, and experience in process optimization. As specialists in cryogenic, vacuum and pressure technologies, the engineering team collaborates with the sales team, project managers, and internal fabrication specialists to offer creative solutions to provide our customers with high quality, safe, and dependable products
Needs to possess a confident demeanor, must be able to communicate with all levels of personnel, and be a good communicator with the ability to communicate detailed data to a non-data literate audience
Essential Duties
Lead a team of engineers and designers to meet or exceed goals and KPIs
Manage performance of direct reports through periodic review meetings and yearly performance discussions
Provide day-to-day management oversight for personnel matters such as time approval and resource loading
Identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the Design Team
Hire, train, mentor, and hold accountable designers, engineers, and support staff
Prioritize and distribute workload, balancing multiple and conflicting priorities to meet budgets and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Participate in technical sales initiatives by developing material estimates and specifications
Develop and implement continuous improvement strategies
Maintain and develop CAD files and associated documentation in accordance with company standards and policies

Serve as a liaison between team members and upper Management
Demonstrate competency in technical decision-making, Safety in design, and Efficiency in design
Escalate any potential issues to Management before they become problems and propose potential resolutions
Ensure Design Teams adopt and make effective use of standard products
Ensure required quality checking/approval procedures are carried out for designs, drawings, and calculations
Be accountable for the quality of all engineering deliverables and technical delivery
Develop simple, effective design delivery processes to help improve the production of design deliverables to time/cost/quality
Support Management in decision making through workload visibility and planning
Promote communication and lead by example
Write department standards
Administrate Design Department software
Evaluate all engineering related software/hardware to ensure employees have the correct tools available and installed to complete their jobs effectively and efficiently
Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars as directed
Embrace the importance of Health & Safety in all circumstances and lead by example
Provide mentoring and help develop / train staff in other departments
Recruit new employees

Responsibilities
Adherence to all set deadlines with overall responsibility for the engineering outputs
Ensures Commercial Design Team delivers required services (drawings, specifications, estimation inputs) on time and to cost/quality standards
Apply and adhere to all Company Design Standards as well as customer and code requirements
Education, Work Experience, Skill Requirements, and Certifications
Experience in Design Team Management
BSME or degree in relevant engineering or physics discipline or:
Minimum 3+ years as a mechanical/cryogenic/manufacturing/designer and/or project manager in a relevant manufacturing environment
Experience in managing a Design Team, with the ability to steer them in new directions, motivate and inspire them
Knowledge of manufacturing process and techniques (forming, machining, welding, and inspection/testing) used in the manufacture of fabricated metal parts.
Experience with ASME Code Section VIII, B31.3 Piping Code, Vacuum Vessels and Process Vessels standard practices a plus
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and understand GD&T
High energy person with drive and motivation to tackle any challenge that requires your expertise
Competent in use of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Vault software, Triflex, MS Office and Microsoft Teams & Project
Ability to delegate authority and achieve results through the motivation and effective performance of others
Ability to effectively present information to top Management
Minimum License, Certifications, Affiliations/Memberships, and CEU’s:
Valid California driver’s license and an insured vehicle in good working order
Skills Required
Advanced level skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, Solid Works, Auto CAD, and general data entry
Must have strong organizational skills and be detail-oriented. Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, prioritize work and handle last-minute demands appropriately
Proven success with working in a team environment
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously without constant supervision
Excellent communication, written, and analytical skills. Must be able to communicate well orally and in writing with the shareholders, Executive Management, co-workers, customers, vendors, and contractors individually and in groups

Special Requirement
May be required to work weekends and holidays as business necessitates; schedules will be determined by management with at least 48 hours advance notice
